About Pointe aux Caves Lighthouse
The Pointe aux Caves Lighthouse, is located on the West-Coast of Mauritius, near the village of Albion.
Already during the Dutch colonization period, the reef along the coast, became fatal for several ships, which ran aground on the reef and sank. The most known tragedy is the sinking of the Banda in 1615, in which Governor Pieter Both died.
The Lighthouse has a hight of around 40 m and was built on the cliffs, in the year 1910. The lighthouse is visible from far away, to warn passing by ships about the dangerous reef along the coast, on their way to Port Louis.
Nowadays, the area around the lighthouse is not only a nice viewpoint along the coast; the lighthouse is still operating and guiding ships to the port of Port Louis.
