About Mahébourg
Mahébourg is a smaller city, located in the Southeast of Mauritius, near the Airport. It belongs to the District of Grand Port and is the biggest city, in this part of the island.
Founded was Mahébourg, as a small settlement from the first Dutch settlers, in the year 1598. The current name comes from the French Admiral and Gouverneur Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais. During the colonial time, Mahébourg was one of the most important cities and the capital city of Mauritius.
In the last decades, Mahébourg has developed into an important and economic center in the region. The city center is characterized by many fashion shops, souvenir traders and restaurants, surrounded from large residential areas.
Additionally, with its colonial history, Mahébourg has continously developed into a popular tourist destination with many smaller guest-houses. Some interesting places to visit are, the Historical Naval Museum and the newly designed Waterfront promenade.
Landmark from Mahébourg and the Region is the big “Lion Mountain”, which towers over the Bay of Mahébourg. A weekly highlight, is the hustle and bustle, at the famous “Monday Market / Bazar”.
