About Tamarin

Tamarin, is an old fisherman village, located on the Westcoast of Mauritius. It belongs to the District of Rivière Noire and is surrounded from the Tamarin Mountain Range.

Already during the French colonial time, Tamarin was a perfect location for the salt extraction from the sea. Almost unchanged since 200 years, salt is still getting produced in Tamarin, in salt pans, after the traditional process. Even though, that nowadays “Fleur de sel” is only a niche product, the salt pans are still visible from the road.

Additionally, Tamarin is the most famous place for surfing in Mauritius. In the Bay of Tamarin, two world famous surfing spots are located, where Championships are getting held.

Since most of the year, Dolphins are staying in the Bay of Tamarin and can be observed during the early morning hours, Tamarin has developed to a popular excursion destination. During the months from April to August, even Sperm whales are approaching the shore of the island and can be spotted.

Furthermore, the region around Tamarin is also a popular destination for deep sea fishing, with the opportunity to catch a big Tuna, Marlin or Baracuda.
