Tour Description:

Enjoy a special snorkeling excursion in a glassbottom boat to discover 3 different snorkeling spots in the lagoon from Blue Bay.

Your special snorkeling excursion starts from the Blue Bay Public Beach. At this time the sea is still calm and not yet a lot of tourists are on the spots.

Our first stop will be the 1st of 3 different snorkeling spots. At each snorkelling spot you will have around 45 minutes to discover the the marine life; as well as time, to enjoy the beautiful surrounding.

During the excursion you will move along the marvellous seaside from Point d´ Esny in direction to Ile-aux-Aigrettes.

Between the different snorkeling stops, you will have time to rest and we will offer you a breakfast, together with coffee, soft drinks and our famous “djungle juice”.

Because of the constant change of the tide, our team will have to decide, depending from the conditions on the day of your excursion, which snorkeling spots are the most perfect. Therefore, the snorkeling places and the course of the tour can be different, from day to day.

After an exciting snorkeling excursion, you will be back for lunch time (between 12:30 and 13:30) at the Public Beach from Blue Bay.

If you have arrived with a taxi (which we can also offer you for your transport – please ask us) you can continue your tour and use the rest of the day to visit other places.

Please note:

Please bring (especially, during the winter season), appropriate clothing such as a lycra or neoprene; as well as a wind- and/or rain jacket, because it may start to rain, at any time, in a tropical country.

Worth knowing about:

Blue Bay Marine Park

The Blue Bay Marine Park is the largest coral garden and largest marine reserve in Mauritius. The 353 ha large area is located in the southeast of Mauritius near the town of Mahebourg. Through the protected location and the perfect water conditions inside the lagoon more than 38 different types of corals and 72 different fish species have been discovered so far. The most common corals are the table coral, the stag horn coral, the stone wash coral and the fire coral. The most famous coral in Blue Bay is the giant, white brain coral with a diameter of 5m. The coral is more than 1,000 years old and grows only about 5 mm per year and is the largest known brain coral in the entire Indian Ocean. Since 1997 the Blue Bay Marine Park has been under the permanent protection of the Mauritius Fisheries and Port Authority. Through this it has become the most important retreat and breeding area for many fish species. Regularly seen fishes are the butterfly fish, the rainbow fish, the parrot fish or the trumpet fish. But also barracudas with a length of 2m are living in the up to 13m deep environment. Another highlight is that even sea turtles have returned to the Blue Bay Marine Park. Up to know, 7 sea turtles are known and regularly seen.

Île aux Aigrettes

Île aux Aigrettes is the biggest Coral-Island, in the South-East from Mauritius. The Island is located inside the riff from Blue Bay and is about 26 hectar large. The history from Île aux Aigrettes can be traced back till the first Dutch settlement in the year 1598. The Dutch name from Île aux Aigrettes was „Visschers Eiland“ and during their colonization they have cut down the entire ebony forest for the export to Europe. During the 2nd World War, the British administration has built a military base on the Island. Some remaining buildings and a restored cannon can be still visited today. The originally for the sheep-breeding used forage plant, Giant Acacia (Leucaena leucocephala), has rapidly spreaded over the whole island and repressed the original flora. Since 1965 Île aux Aigrettes has the status of a nature reserve, but first with the takeover and protection through the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation in the year 1985, the reculturing process of the original flora and fauna has started. The result from this protection and the lasting effort through the Wildlife Foundation is, that Île aux Aigrettes is nowadays homeland and rearing station from some endemic birds, animals and plants, which were almost extinct in Mauritius. The most known animal is the pink-pigeon (Streptopelia mayeri), but also important to mention are the Aldabra-Giant-Turtle (Aldabrachelys) as well as the Telfair-Skink (Leiolopisma telfairii). The todays name from the island: Île aux Aigrettes, goes back to the in the 17th century in Mauritius extinct silver egret – „Aigrettes“.
